Where were the current 40% New Yorkers Born?

According to New York City official website, NYC is the largest and ethnically diverse city in the United States with a population of 8.4 million people. The greater New York metropolitan area has about 24 million people.  It is the largest city in the United States, and its population is defined by a long history of immigration. The city remains by far, the greatest gateway for legal immigrants, thanks to its major entry points for immigrants in the Lower East Regions.

Over the past decade, the population of NYC has been growing at an exponential rate. As many as 800 languages are being spoken by New Yorkers. This has made it one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world.  As a matter of fact, there are areas in the city (examples include Sunset Park, Flushing and Corona) where a whopping 25% of the population speak English as their second language.

NYC being one of the most linguistically diverse cities

According to the current estimates, about 40% of New Yorkers were born outside the United States. Apparently, this is partly due to the passage of Immigration and Nationality Amendments (1965) that led to outpouring of immigrants into New York City. Today, the total foreign immigrant is about 2.87 million, the majority of them coming from Latin America, Europe, Asia, non-Hispanic Caribbean and Africa.

Countries of Origin of the immigrants

Currently, the Dominican Republic is the largest source of New York’s foreign immigrants, according to the Wall Street Journal, making 13% of the total population. It is followed by China, Jamaica, Guyana and Mexico. Others include Ecuador, Haiti, Tobago, Trinidad, Russia and Colombia. It is also worth noting that more than 43% of New York City’s foreign immigrants are recent immigrants (those who entered the city from 1990s), and those who entered the City from the 1980s account for more than 70% of the total immigrants in the city.
