Current Housing Project in Queens

via Habitat NYC

Given the age of New York City, it isn’t surprising that there are a lot of buildings needing some tender love and care. Habitat NYC are rehabilitating 12 vacant homes in Queens that have been a thorn in the communities side for decades as one of their newest housing projects.

Formerly a part of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Program, the homes were put back under the U.S. Housing and Urban Development agency’s (HUD) control in the 70s. Rented out as public housing by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) since the 70s, Habitat NYC purchased the homes for $1 each for the purpose of rehabilitation. Due to the extended time which the homes were vacant the rehabilitation will require a full renovation and total gutting of the properties.

Habitat NYC is committed to decreasing the carbon footprint of housing in NY and will meet Enterprise Community Green standards which will not only ensure healthy environments but also cost-saving fuel efficiencies. In October, five of the homes will become part of the Carter Work Project. Once completed, the homes will provide affordable living in two and three bedroom single-family homes to low-income families.
