Madison Avenue – A Brief History

“Madison Avenue” and “advertising” are often said in one word. But do you have any idea of Manhattan’s Madison Avenue history? Here’s a brief overview.

Madison avenue is named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison. It runs from Madison Square Park with its many trees and charming atmosphere.

But as said, Madison Avenue became a big name in the advertising industry. The big boom took place in the 1920’s. To learn more of the emerging advertising culture on Madison Avenue, we suggest the watch the Mad Men drama series, depicting the advertising life on Madison Avenue in the 1960’s. Nowadays, big advertising firms have moved away from the famous avenue, but there are still some die-hard companies left, such as Young & Rubicam, TBWA Worldwide and StrawberryFrog.

And of course, when we talk about Madison Avenue we automatically associate it with Madison Square Garden.
